The Language Factory & Oxfam
The Language Factory is pleased to announce its support of
Oxfam and the amazing work it does throughout the world. Thanks to our clients,
we are proud to have been able to donate around £100,000 to the charity organisation
and its many worthwhile projects since 2005.
Over the last 5 years, we have made contributions to projects
in Rwanda, Tanzania, Brazil and Malawi. We have recently turned our attention to supporting Oxfam's
work in preventing the spread of HIV & AIDS among women and children in South Africa.
Gender inequality in South Africa means that women and girls are
disproportionately vulnerable to HIV infection. The threat of sexual violence and the historical and
cultural dominance of men contribute to the spread of HIV and AIDS. Women are often unable to negotiate,
for example, the conditions under which sex occurs, especially the use of condoms, which contributes
to the spread of the virus.
The link between inequalities between men and women, and HIV and
AIDS is only recently being accepted, but it is still not fully understood. Challenging entrenched
attitudes and perceptions will be a difficult task. At present, community organisations campaigning
for change lack the research, connections and unity on which to base a strong campaign.
The project The Language Factory is supporting has aimed to go
beyond the provision of healthcare and treatment and to address some of the root causes behind the
spread of HIV and AIDS in South Africa.
It has contributed to:
empowering women and girls to understand their sexual rights, which
helps them protect themselves against HIV and AIDS
increasing the involvement of men in debate and education to challenge
the attitudes, values and beliefs with respect to women
improving access to healthcare, treatment and support for people living
with HIV and AIDS
The donations The Language Factory makes to Oxfam, thanks to our
clients, help to fund the charity's vital work in a country so desperately in need of
sustainable assistance. To learn more about Oxfam's work in South Africa, visit their
